Today, a young Indian Navy Officer transitioning from the military to the corporate world asked me an important question:
“How can one transition successfully from the military to corporate life?”
*This is a very relevant question for all my retiring brothers and sisters-in-arms.
*In my view, this is the best time for Indian Armed Force Officers to transition into the Indian defence sector. The sector is booming, expanding rapidly, and becoming technologically more lethal at an unprecedented pace. This is not a rosy picture, but a cautionary pointer highlighting the need for seamless planning to ensure long-term success in both life and career. My two cents of advice to retiring members of the Indian Armed Force Officers fraternity:
1. You are at the start of your second innings—capitalise on your technical expertise. Don’t start from the scratch. Build up on your core competency gained during Armed Forces Service.
Be part of the learning curve. Stay hands-on and continuously upgrade your skills.
2. At this stage, avoid roles limited to security, administration, operations, or PMO functions.
Focus instead on roles that build deep domain and technical competence.
3. Think in terms of a long-term career path, with the following priorities:
-Priority I: DPSUs such as HAL, BDL, BEL, etc.
-Priority II: Indian private defence companies like Adani, Solar Industries, L&T, Bharat Forge, Tata Advanced Systems, Reliance, JSW, etc., especially those companies involved in drones, UAVs, missiles, and advanced systems development.
-Priority III: Foreign OEMs and JVs in India such as Thales, Boeing, Leonardo, etc.
-Priority IV: MRO Cos. like Air Works, SEC, MAX etc.
! Whichever opportunity comes first, Grab it. Time matters. Take the leap based on your aptitude and job fit.
*Stay with one organisation for a minimum of 3–5 years and develop core competency in a specific vertical domain. Over time, aim to use this vertical domain expertise (Explosive & Non-Explosive: Design, Development, Production, Testing, Proof, Storage, Transportation etc., S1000D Technical Documentation, System Integration, Flight Test, Failure Analysis, QA/QC etc. and rotate yourself across the following horizontal domains:
-Indian User (Armed Forces – Already achieved).
-Indian Manufacturer / Integrator (HAL, BDL, BEL, etc.).
-Make-in-India Prime Partner (Adani, L&T, Tata, etc.).
-Indian Defence ToT / JV Partner (Thales, SAAB, Collins, RTX, Leonardo, etc.).
-Indian Military MRO Co. – AIESL, Crown Group, DAMROI, SIKA etc.
*This journey will help you become a true domain specialist and a valuable national asset in your second innings after military service.
! Just remember—this is not retirement; it is a continuation of learning and contribution.
